Analytical and numerical modelling of air trapping during wetting of unsaturated soils

چکیده
At high values of degree saturation, the apparent soil water retention curve (SWRC) measured in a wetting test laboratory may differ from true SWRC, because occurrence air trapping, meaning that gas pressure trapped is greater than externally applied pressure. Physical arguments indicate SWRC will reach full saturation at positive value suction. Analytical and numerical modelling phenomenon trapping during shows that, once occurs, depends upon many aspects conditions not fundamental representation behaviour. The only correct way to represent influence within boundary problems use combination with conductivity expression goes zero air-discontinuity point.

Unsaturated soils: From constitutive modelling to numerical algorithms
This paper presents an overview of constitutive modelling of unsaturated soils and the numerical algorithms for solving the associated boundary value problems. It first discusses alternative stress and strain variables that can be used in constitutive models for unsaturated soils. The paper then discusses the key issues in unsaturated soil modelling and how these issues can be incorporated into...

15 صفحه اولNumerical Modelling of Optical Trapping
Optical trapping is a widely used technique, with many important applications in biology and metrology. Complete modelling of trapping requires calculation of optical forces, primarily a scattering problem, and nonoptical forces. The T-matrix method is used to calculate forces acting on spheroidal and cylindrical particles. Preprint of: T. A. Nieminen, H. Rubinsztein-Dunlop, N. R. Heckenberg an...
متن کاملModelling plasticity of unsaturated soils in a thermodynamically consistent framework
Constitutive equations of unsaturated soils are often derived in a thermodynamically consistent framework through the use a unique ’effective’ interstitial pressure. This later is naturally chosen as the space averaged interstitial pressure. However, experimental observations have revealed that two stress state variables were needed to describe the stressstrain-strength behaviour of unsaturated...
متن کاملElasto-plastic Modelling of Unsaturated Soils : an Overview
This paper presents an overview of elasto-plastic modelling of unsaturated soils. Alternative stress and strain variables that have been used in constitutive models for unsaturated soils are discussed. The use of an effective stress equation may simplify constitutive relations, but often result in a stress space that depends on the material state. In this case, the constitutive behaviour is emb...
